The Big Mess-Up

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (Genesis 3:6)

This is the familiar story in the Bible where Adam and Eve messed up big time! Every time we read Genesis 3, we partly blame it on them and forget that we too mess up every day! Like the first couple, we have the following scenario played out on a regular basis:

  • We listen to God’s Word that is distorted (v.1-3) and denied (v.4-5) by Satan
  • We respond by defying (v.6-7) God’s Word
  • Finally, we are forced to receive the decree(v. 8-19) of God’s will

But from this ‘big mess-up’ in Genesis 3, we can learn lessons which can change our daily lives:

Firstly, we should learn that God’s Word is the STANDARD for our daily lives. Regardless of all popular philosophies, the Bible is the ultimate foundation for our faith and practice. We cannot distort, deny, or defy it but we are to commit our lives to follow it.

Secondly, we must admit SIN is our problem. We have messed up big time and we cannot blame it on anyone else. We must confess we have sinned against God and we need God’s help to change.

Thirdly, SUFFERING is because of our sin. The world suffers daily because of the consequences of our sin. Our small personal actions and big community decisions impacts the globe. We should take responsibility for the state of affairs on our planet.

Finally, our SOLUTION is Christ. The only way to rewrite the ‘big mess-up’ is to restart our lives in Christ. Jesus Christ, God’s Son, is God’s gift to our world to set us free from our problem of sin. When we confess our mess and we invite Jesus to be the ONLY solution to help us, we discover hope and purpose for our lives and our world.
